The criteria for evaluating diamonds are as follows:
- The Color of a Diamond
Evaluating a diamond’s color is not as easy as it seems. This requires color comparison stones, also known as master stones. Master stones are unique because they reliably represent all color grades and thus define the lower limit of each color grade. These color grades are subject to a reference standard issued by the WFDB, the IDMA, and the CIBJO.
A comparative evaluation is conducted under artificial light that mimics daylight. For this purpose, the diamonds are compared with the master stones on a white sheet of paper or a paper fold. If there is a match between the diamonds and the color comparison stone, the latter is considered valid. If the color falls between two color comparison stones, the darker grade is always used for the calculation. - Diamond Cuts The teardrop, cushion, and marquise cuts are considered the essential diamond cuts. In addition, there are the step cut and the emerald or baguette cuts.
- ‘s Diamond Clarity To determine a diamond’s clarity, our expert staff examines the diamond for specific abnormalities such as inclusions, fractures, or unnatural transparency.
- The Carat Weight of a Diamond
One of the most important criteria for a diamond is its carat weight, i.e., the weight of the stone. This is determined using a special scale and is always listed with two decimal places in the appraisal.
